Review of First Reformed (2018) by Frances C — 28 Aug 2018
Though environmental themes are worthy, the story was not. Spoiler alert: The main character is a middle-aged pastor who grapples with strapping on a suicide vest. Playing into that choice, he's also dealing with life-threatening cancer, devastating grief over the death of his son, dissolution of his marriage, alcoholism, and job instability.
A lot of issues on his plate, no? Don't worry, they tie it all up with a huge, pink satin bow in the last scene by having him fall in love with a young widow who is pregnant with a boy--and they all lived happily ever after.
