Review of First Reformed (2018) by Dale P — 13 Aug 2018
A dense, slow moving film that plays with haunting themes and disturbing ideas, anchored by rock solid work from Schrader, Ethan Hawke, and the supporting cast. I actually didn't know Schrader did the film until about 3/4 of the way through, at which point things started to make sense; this was after Hawke's character has had a full psychotic break, not unlike that of Travis Bickle.
it's also fascinating to see multiple intelligent, well-versed, self-aware Christians debate the philosophy (and practical application) of their religion.
