Review of First Man (2018) by Greg D — 21 Oct 2018
Part Apollo 13, Part IMAX 'Bouncing on the Moon', this movie struggles to find it's identity. In playing Neil Armstrong true to character, revealing a shy, introverted professional who may have been slightly on the spectrum, Ryan Gosling does an honest, bang up job.
Watching it is like watching a documentary, and many will be turned off by the realism of everyday family life. Similarly, the movie tries to show you what it is really like to be in a rocket and go to the moon.
And surprise - IT SUCKS, it's too loud, it's too shaky, and then you climb in the spacesuit and all you can hear is your breathing and silence, and it's too claustrophobic. But all absolutely real.
It's not something I'd see again, unlike Apollo 13 which is endlessly entertaining with the characters and writing. I'm thankful to watch something very real, though. It's a rarity today.
