Review of First Man (2018) by Straciatellas — 23 Oct 2018
I was really looking forward to this movie, mainly because of the newest co-op between Damien Chazelle and Ryan Gosling. On some levels, First Man met the expectations. It's informative, host to some great acting by Ryan Gosling and Claire Foy, and overall pretty decent to watch.
However, for me personally, the choice to make the movie more documentary like in cinematography didn't pay off as well as I would have hoped. At the beginning it was OK, but as the movie progressed it sometimes felt like the cinematography was part of a low budget "let's not have too many special effects" choice.
The shocky images even made me nauxious from time to time watching it in the theater. For me the acting in the movie saved it from an even lower grade. All in all it definitely wasn't a waste of time, but for me it's not in the "must-watch-again" category.
