Review of First Man (2018) by Eoin H — 19 Oct 2018
I really this movie which provides an insight into the events that lead up to the moon landing in 1969. I'm surprised there hasn't been a movie looking directly at such a major event in human history before, perhaps it was little obvious until enough time passes by.
The movie looks at who was Neil Armstrong and how exactly was he the man that ended up being the first man on the moon. The selection process, the training undertaken, the political pressures and the danger involved and the impact it all has on a man's family are covered and it makes for fascinating viewing.
The story is well told and conveyed by some excellent performances. Gosling does a great job portraying Niel Armstrong, a quiet, intense and introverted man deeply affected by the death of his young daughter. He is supported well by wife Claire Foy constantly at risk of losing her husband.
The best scenes in the movie are the highly tense scenes when they travel into space. Locked into tiny chambers in rockets and have to deal with obstacles that I could never have imagined. The tension of their successful mission on Apollo 11 builds excellently until the incredible scene where they experience the tranquility of landing on the moon.
Very good watch and probably enjoyed it more as I watched it on a 20 metre wide IMAX screen for the first time.
