Review of First Man (2018) by Jeffrey R — 14 Oct 2018
This is not a film about NASA or even going to the Moon. It's a film about the life of the first human who walked on the Moon and the events that lead to him going there. We all have our own strengths and weaknesses.
Neil grew up in a time where men were discouraged from expressing their hurts. He lost his 2 year old daughter to a brain tumor, many of his best friends in experimental aircraft and spacecraft related accidents.
All of them within a decade. He was a hell of an engineer, incredibly brave, reserved and to the point. He struggled to communicate with his family and when it came to the press he was not the showman they wanted him to be.
He went to the Moon and brought us all there by acknowledging that the effort was of 400,000 employees and the purpose was for "All Mankind" (It was the 60s. I acknowledge Humankind is more appropriate).
My favorite quote of his goes like this, "I am, and ever will be, a white-socks, pocket protector, nerdy engineer. Born under the Second Law of Thermodynamics, steeped in the steam tables, in love with free body diagrams, transformed by Laplace and propelled by compressible flow.
.. Science is about what is. Engineering is about what can be.".
