Some of the dialogue does stink. I strongly believe I could have done a better job than these writers. Watching this now as opposed to when I was a teen, I see how Gere is far out if place here. All other cast members are convincing in their roles.
Try to ignore the cheesy dialogue and enjoy this film. It is entertaining despite its setbacks.
