Review of First Knight (1995) by Alysia V — 05 Apr 2009
I never tire of this movie. It's wonderfully cast and I so enjoy watching everyone's performances. Julia Ormond-now why don't we see more of her in films? I really think she's a wonderful actress that is far too over-looked.
She's elegant and lovely and I think she is great in this. But what is it about her getting caught up in these complicated love triangles? (i.e. "Legends of the Fall" and "Sabrina." and now this.
) She just can't keep the men off, I guess. Sean Connery is great as King Arthur and I love his gentle spirit. Richard Gere is captivating and I can easily see why he so quickly swept "Guinevere" off her feet.
He's a very charming Lancelot in this film. It's a wonderful movie and I feel for Ormond's pain in making her decision as to whom to fully give her heart to. The scene when Connery walks in on Guinevere and Lancelot kissing is just heartbreaking.
It's so hard to know who to root for in this film, for both guys seem to be very honorable and kind-hearted men, but I do always hate to see King Arthur betrayed like that. Oh, the woes of love. The ending is intense (that music during the ending fight scenes between Lancelot and Malagant makes it all the more so!) and heartbreaking yet somewhat hopeful.
King Arthur or Lancelot? Who would you choose?
