Review of First Knight (1995) by Ryan G — 19 Jun 2011
I thought Sean Connery was way too old to play Arthur but Richard Gere made a really good Lancealot. This came out the same year as Braveheart and Rob Roy , and I thought Rob Roy was a better movie than Braveheart, I have reviews on both of them, but anyway back to this one.
First Knight is entertaining and it has some good opening moments and for a while I really enjoyed it. It's not a bad adventure flick in the sense that there is a lot of adventure, there's not too much action but there's a healthy dose of it.
However when there isn't action, the story really isn't that good to hold up. It looks okay and I've always been a big fan of fantasies, but this was not really good. The costume design was humorously bad, the action sequences were poorly filmed and the acting was par at best.
The Directors cut of King Arthur(2004) is the ultimate rendition in my opinion. Ioan Gruffud is the perfect Lancelot and Clive Owen is far better than Connery because he is younger and more convincing.
First Knight kept my attention, at least for a little while, but it's overall a poor film.
