Review of First Blood (1982) by Dave A — 09 Jan 2011
First Blood comes as no surprise to many, as its another kick-ass, pre-Get Carter action movie from Stallone. The story is simple enough; a rugged psychologically unstable Vietnam vet breezes through a town, only to be harassed by the small town sheriff for vagrancy. His troubles lead him to be "rebooted" in ops mode and wage war on the dumb-ass bumbling police force. Hilarity ensues.
The movie works well because Rambo is a great hero, and Dennehy plays the conniving dickhead villain-type perfectly. Kinda reminds me a bit of The Last Castle. A popular army vet took on a crooked jail warden in that one. Except Rambo has been the greater influence for many movies and games to follow.
Watching Rambo, you know where Hideo Kojima got his inspiration for Metal Gear from. I saw shades of Alan Wake here too. The landscapes, action pieces are all beautifully shot, from the cramped caves, to cliff-side shots.
All in all, green berets kick ass. Except for that one guy in Commando. Not too wise taking on the Guvernator in that one!!
