Review of Finding Neverland (2004) by Kay K — 08 Jan 2013
I am on a mission to watch movies I have never seen before that I have always wanted to. 'Finding Neverland' is one of these films. I knew it would be good because Johnny Depp can turn a mediocre film into a work of art with his presence and Kate Winslet is indeed one of the greatest actresses of her time. But this film was even better than all that.
You would never guess that this is screenwriter David Magee's first script. He spins the web of this tale so fluidly that you'll think he has been writing scripts for years. Director Marc Forster, best known for directing Halle Berry in her Oscar winning role in Monster's Ball, makes this film as visually enchanting as it is in depth. The way he puts this film together is part 'Big Fish' part 'Shakespeare in Love' and is 100% magic.
Freddie Highmore as Peter is a stand out and plays a whole range of emotions in a truthful and simple way. Apparently Johnny Depp liked Highmore so much he convinced Tim Burton to cast him as Charlie in the Willy Wonka remake. Finding Neverland is just a really good movie. It is heart warming and makes you want to be a kid again. Fun!
