Review of Filth (2013) by Ben B — 08 Aug 2014
Before I talk about what this film lacks, I have to give James McAvoy his due for a great performance. He is dirty, arrogant, scheming, and tormented. His role as a cop looking for a promotion is one that will get you to hate his character.
'Filth' is exactly what it sounds like. You have a lot of gratuitous sex, drugs, violence and other things. Basically everything your parents tell you not to do, this movie has in abundance. This would be fine, if this film actually had any real substance behind it.
Not until the end of the film do we actually traces on what could have been a solid film, as we explore Bruce's (McAvoy) neurosis. This is something that could have been explored better for the entire runtime.
Even the presence of actors such as Jamie Bell and Jim Broadbent cannot save 'Filth' from itself.
