Review of Filth (2013) by Al M — 22 Aug 2014
From the even more awesome Irvine Welsh novel, Filth is hilarious, poignant, insane and completely pitch black in tone. While the film does not perfectly adapt Welsh's crazily brilliant novel, McAvoy's performance makes up for all deficiencies with his level of intensity.
It is a performance that can only be termed iconic as the audience will simultaneously love and despise him, laugh with him and feel repulsed, and finally even empathize with him before the film's conclusion.
A dark look at human nature, trauma, and mental illness, Filth takes us to bottom of the human condition and holds a mirror to our faces...
