Review of Filth (2013) by Dillinger P — 05 Sep 2014
Filth balances between the absurd and realism so well, that it becomes increasingly hard to sympathize or be enraged with McAvoy's portrayal of Bruce Robertson as the movie progresses. The audience is expected to either walk out of the movie, or to stay to the end, either hoping that Bruce finds redemption or ultimately destroys himself. And that is exactly what the movie accomplishes.
McAvoy himself takes the reins as the misanthropic, manipulative man that fictionalized Edinburgh has come to know as Detective Sergeant Bruce Robertson and displays an uncanny second skin nature towards the role.
