Review of Fighting (2014) by Mimi S — 03 Feb 2014
Channing Tatum is hot, but honestly an unforgettable film. Fighting didn't really do much to capture my attention (apart from Channing Tatum); I found myself getting pretty bored. The film is about struggling street hustler, Shawn MacArthur (Tatum), whose luck changes when he meets con artist Harvey Boarden (Terrence Howard); who offers him the chance to be a street fighter. Soon Shawn gets a name for himself for beating his opponents. There's always got to be a bit of romance thrown in the mix and Shawn finds himself lusting after single mom Zulay (Zulay Henao). Channing Tatum is likeable in his role, but I found the other characters bland and forgettable. It doesn't help that I'm not particularly a fan of films about life on the street so this really wasn't my thing at all. I thought the script and the storyline weren't very strong and I got bored really easily, only paying attention every now and then. This film is nothing special. Guys might like it and if you're happy enough to see Channing Tatum on the screen despite a bad storyline, this is the film for you. Channing Tatum was the only good thing about this movie, I enjoyed gawping at him, but it takes a lot more than a hot actor to make a good movie.
Grade: D.
