Review of Fifty Dead Men Walking (2008) by Sean M — 28 Jul 2009
First off - Jim Sturgess can't act. I had to say it - it's out there. That being said; it's an excellent story - executed horribly. If you're going to pull off the accents - pull them off a) correctly and b) understandably.
I understood about 1 in 5 sentences spoken; and I know I wasn't the only one as people were audibly talking about how bad the accents were throughout the entire movie. I felt like I almost needed subtitles to understand what was going on.
The story was disjointed and jumpy and at times confusing - but if I have one bit of praise it would be that of Ben Kingsley. His part however didn't do him justice. He wasn't given much room to act or to show his true talents - he was just there to counter act Jim Sturgess' character, and like I said before Jim Sturgess can't act.
..I spent the entire movie going: that's the kid from 21 - and other than his very flawed mustache he looked exactly the same thing. It was as if the director tried to show the audiences that he scored the kid from 21 to be in his movie! Ben Kingsley on the other hand was almost unrecognizable.
But once you realized it was him you were hooked in by his character and the depth that was there; as minimal of a depth as the director gave him. I would skip this movie. If you're really interested about the I.
R.A./British historical stuff - go to a library - read a book. Skip this movie.
