Review of Fierce People (2006) by Erik M — 20 Oct 2009
Fierce people has a lot going for it, some fabulous actors including Anton Yelchin and Donald Sutherland, a really interesting premise, and some really great images contrasting the primitive South African tribes with the almost soap opera like world the characters of Fierce People live.
But despite this, the movie cannot find a way to propel itself forward. The movie flows forward from happening to happening just to keep itself moving, some of these seem to work very well, but when there is little break between them, the movie begins to feel like a soap opera even more so.
Anton Yelchin and Donald Sutherland make the movie completely watchable and even Chris Evans and Kristen Stewart do an exceptional job, and even with the bizarre pacing the movie would definitely be worth watching just as a character study and commentary on the societies we create.
Something happens in the third act however which destroyed my experience with the movie, there is a sudden reveal which destroys any kind of realism the movie has created until then and simply broke anything positive I could have had to say about the script or the film making.
