Review of Fiddler on the Roof (1971) by David Z — 21 Aug 2008
Norman Jewison's masterpiece, this leisurely-paced film is beautiful visually and emotionally. It's incredibly faithful to the stage version and in all the right ways. I doubt there is a musical that has turned out to be more universal than this one.
And while everyone, including Topol, gives top-notch performances, special praise must be given to Isaac Stern. He's positively thrilling. Oh and ignore the Flixster running time. It's only 3 hrs and 1 minute, not 21.
