Review of Fiddler on the Roof (1971) by Jordan P — 29 Nov 2010
What many reviewers dislike about this movie is what I like the most. The portrayal of poor Jewish Russian life is so natural that the film could almost pass as a documentary at times (if it weren't for the musical numbers).
The film never stoops to emotional manipulation or sappiness but instead shows restraint at key emotional scenes. The performances are subtle but not in the self conscious way that many modern art house film performances are.
