Review of Fiddler on the Roof (1971) by Terry W — 29 Oct 2011
Everyone knows that director Norman Jewison isn't even Jewish, right? Either way, this great director takes a memorable stage play and puts his on style and spin into a memorable movie experience. "Tradition", Matchmaker, Matchmaker", "If I Were A Rich Man", Sunrise, Sunset", and "To Life"; if the music alone isn't enough to catch your interest, then the performance of Topol should. He carries the film with such heart and humor. The subject of tradtion vs. change is examined and is it worth leaving one's tradtitions in order to give way to change? Jewison has always made social and political conscience films and this is no different. The music and editing are superb and the way the characters break into songs feels natural and not stagy like most musicals. Mazel tov to everyone involved!
