Review of Fern Hill (2005) by David D — 16 Dec 2012
A surprisingly good little Stand By Me clone. This movie is rather postmodern in the manner that it openly acknowledges in the screenplay how derivative it all is of that finer film. It never achieves the natural storytelling of that film, relying too much on the voiceover telling us the things that were obvious in the story itself of Stand By Me.
The acting is not bad in my opinion but certainly not on a par with the cast of the more famous film. All in all, I found it a satisfying low budget effort that put across its Christian message without ever getting preachy or diverging too far from realism in portraying a group of adolescents.
