Review of Fermat's Room (2007) by Sarn L — 21 Aug 2008

The premis here is wrong. There isn't 4 mathematicians in the room, there's 5 actors and they're not all mathematicians. This is made clear in the first 20 minutes.

I read the back of the box and I thoughy, okay let's give it a try. Sitges loved it. Infact my respect for nominated movies from Sitges has gone through the ground. The absolute crap they give awards to is beyond compare.

This movie fits within this realm. Basically, you have 4 people interconnected and bought together by a mastermind who no-one knows but is famous. Plot flaw Number 1 - if this guys is undercover and infamous why do people ONLY try and find out about him because they're going to meet him.**** SPOILER**** As he turns out to be one of the capturesd - as expected from Agatha Christie stories, how come he's been leading a double life only to extract this one revenge. Kinda a bit STRAINED NO?

Anyway, it's well acted but as with all agatha christie novels there's a contrived plot line. This is: Note the person speaking the most and seems the one most innocent. Then, ergo this person is the killer. Lo and behold... there you go it is. It wasn't the butler in the kitchen with the spanner!

So, having worked this out 10 minutes into the film the adsurd final section where there's a plan to get out, would not have worked for the killer unless he killed them with his hands. SO it's kinda like - WHAT....

Strong performances and direction. But nothing outstanding. But I give 1 peanut as the storyline, like most of Agatha Christie movies needs to be consigned to the bin [in my opinion.
