Review of Fermat's Room (2007) by Claire B — 10 Apr 2010
In a way this is an artful Spanish mystery that feels a lot like a game of Clue (or a dress-party murder mystery). Four mathematicians find themselves stuck in a room and have to work out why they're there and why the room seems to be shrinking.
There are some problems, or at least considerations. The puzzles that the mathematicians have to work out would probably not challenge world-class mathematicians. They are mostly for the audience. (You are free to imagine that the real puzzles are harder and more obscure.
) Also, the characters don't seem particularly interested in solving the puzzles, even though correct answers stop the room from shrinking and crushing everyone; believability sucks its thumb quietly on the back seat sometimes.
Still, someone deserves props for trying to turn math into an adventure movie. This won an audience award at the Spanish Malaga Fantastic Film Festival.
