Review of Fences (2016) by Ari S — 04 Jan 2017
Right from fade in the dialogue and script are so strong in act 1 that its captivated you for the journey ahead. With a few minor transition bumps in acts 2 and 3 mostly being that although amazing I wanted to see more between father and son. There was plenty but I think the fact that it kept me wanting more is what also makes it great. I can't say it enough Denzel is astonishing from beginning to end.
I can't think of any other actor who could pull off this role with the amount of skill it took to genuinely portray the characters fearsome side to such a degree while being so joyous and filled with laughter a split second later it felt like there were so many classic lines being said in each scene. Amazing cast performances especially Viola who's nothing short of perfect in the way she carries herself emotionally standing by this man through thick and thin. I know this was a play and brought to the big screen and it felt a bit like that but Denzel directed it very well with great confidence and I think it paid off.
I think this film will stand the test of time as the period piece and people's attitudes were a huge part of cultural change in American history. So far best drama I have seen this year.
