Denzel Washington and Viola Davis give award worthy performances in this film. In my opinion, Fences works better as a play than a film due to the heavy dialogue and infrequent scene changes. However I visually enjoyed the set designs -- much more so than in a typical film.
Admittedly it is difficult to get through the first 20 minutes of straight dialogue but by the end of the film I was grateful that I resisted the urge to leave. It is a great film if you have the patience to sit through it.
