Review of Fences (2016) by The D — 26 Jan 2017
It was torture sitting through this film, with the last scene making me physically ill. The victim card is played throughout this nauseatingly overlong experience. I was completely unsympathetic for the main character.
And if you thought Bubba from Forrest Gump died in '94, he didn't. He got a plate in his head and time travelled back to the fifties to ruin this movie. I really wanted to leave halfway through but was forced to stay for another reason.
Denzel, one of the finest actors alive, should not direct himself either. He tries WAY too hard here. Obviously I was put off by the message of this rather than the outstanding production value (I would have been put off by the play as well).
And Viola did a good job and may even win the Oscar due to an overall substandard year of leading ladies IMO. It was ironic that I saw this film immediately after sitting through Moonlight, which was far more effective and powerful.
