Review of Fences (2016) by Brendan P — 01 Feb 2017
Fences is a complex, riveting period drama. It is at times slow and frustrating, in its slow plot buildup. Yet, Viola Davis, Denzel Washington, Stephen Henderson Jovan Aleppo and Mykleti Williamson give exceptional performances. They bring depth and substance to their characters, especially the genuine emotion Viola Davis portrays as Rose Maxon. She or Octavia Spencer ( from another great movie "Hidden Figures ") truly deserve the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress.
One of my favorite characters is Gabe Maxon, ( portrayed by Mykleti Williamson ) as Troy Maxon's war disabled brother. I love his positive, spiritual outlook on life, despite all that's happened. He always seems to be the icebreaker in tense, difficult situations.
Overall I would highly recommend either seeing this in theaters or buying this on Blue Ray/ DVD.
