Review of Fences (2016) by Catherine E — 26 Feb 2017
Fences: Denzel Washington produces, directs and stars in this rehash of the Pulitzer Prize and Tony award-winning story about a Pittsburgh garbage collector, bitter that his fame as a baseball player in his athletic heyday was limited to the Negro Leagues, at a time when black players were not allowed in the major leagues.
The film remains mired in the look and feel of a play, which, on the big screen, just feels dry, long-winded and tedious, despite well-written dialogue and Viola Davis' standout performance as his long-suffering wife.
