Review of Fences (2016) by Nico S — 27 Feb 2017
The first act is quite slow and doesn't really build up any plot. The first act gives the audiences a feel for the characters' life styles, personas and their environment. The rest of the film is a heart wrenching story that is beautifully told with Washington behind the lense.
He did a good job at composing every scene and knew how to make a great scene really, really hit you hard emotionally. The performances all round were absolutely riveting, this might be Denzel Washington's best performance; he can go from a loveable, soft and kindhearted man, to a cold, and ruthless father and husband on the switch of a dime.
The same can be said about Viola Davis' performance; every scene she's in, you can see every last bit of emotion in her dripping out of the screen and from her nose. All these actors were totally engulfed in their characters and elevated this film to a level that would've otherwise not have been attained had anyone else been involved.
