When you get right down to it, this is the funniest and best film he ever made. The relationship between Aunt Ida and Gator alone would put this head and shoulder above most other movies, but everything about it is great.
From the gross-out stuff (more shocking in many cases than Pink Flamingos) to the regular old dialogue ("Have another pretzel for Christ sakes," "I'll have an extremely large glass of ice water"), this is a total masterpiece.
