Review of Fed Up (2014) by Jon F — 20 Sep 2014
The irony of Katie Couric producing a movie about the evils of sugar when she made her billions in part thanks to Coca-Cola is not the only thing that struck me as unbelievable about this film. Ok, we get it.
.. we eat way too much sugar as a nation. But we eat way too much of a lot of other things too. That this documentary pushed sugar as the primary if not the sole cause of our obesity epidemic is hugely misleading and depressing.
We can't wave a magic wand by removing added sugar from our diets (or for that matter, processed foods in general) and go from obese to healthy. Obesity and overweight are much more complex than that.
It also didn't settle well that they made the obese kids into victims of the food industry - especially seeing as these kids didn't change their eating (and sometimes exercise) habits very much, and then seemed surprised that they weren't seeing results.
