Review of Fearless (2006) by Kingsley C — 27 Apr 2012
Jet Li plays Huo Yuanjia, a 1910-era martial arts master whose potential is crippled by overwhelming hubris. A horrific accident humbles him deeply and Yuanjia finds himself without purpose. His goal arrives, however, with his dedication to defeating Western opponents in fighting tournaments and therefore helping China reclaim some of its lost dignity.
Fearless is a gorgeous-looking movie that features a great performance from Li and some typically wonderful fight choreography from Yuen Woo Ping. Social historians will also be interested in Fearless since it's such a blatant piece of Chinese jingoism.
Watching this film made me understand how citizens of other countries must feel whenever they see a film like Rocky IV or Rambo: First Blood Part II.
