Review of Fear of Fear (1975) by Michael K — 17 Nov 2007
Vintage Fassbinder. Full of commentary and barbs about social mores - the two lovers face intense rejection from everyone, then have trouble with the relationship itself. Boring, embarassing, uncomfortable, and brilliant.
Fassbinder is dealing with difficult love, love between different ages and races, social rejection, and family; all in the context of the flood of negative emotions in postwar Germany.
He is also playing with cinematic techniques in ways that will bewilder you if you don't think about it. But he lets you in on the joke if you do - he is using the framing and the claustraphobia as techniques in and of themselves.
Possibly not the best pick-me-up if you're feeling a tad suicidal.
