Review of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1998) by George W — 07 Nov 2012
Fear and Loathing is one of those books, you like it or you don't. Terry Gilliam is the only director I can think of who could have made a film version work, his surreal visual style is perfect for Hunter S territory.
Its a ride through the dark side of the "American Dream". A dissection of the dark underbelly of hypocrisy, excess and of the drug culture and its failings, its hypocrisy.
Gilliam does a good job of keeping it all together and delivering the books ideas. It could have been turned into a "Weekend at Porkys", mtv, "Dude, wheres my stash", upmarket Cheech n Chong joke for the frat pack.
One of Terry Gilliam's best films.
