A quasi-perfect depiction of the book with very little theatrical creativity. I did like the unfolding format of the movie, founded heavily on Thompson's gonzo journalist experience. Depp and Del Toro are sharp at times, but mostly too stupid (or drugged) to convey anything cogently.

The book is brimming with intriguing allusions to history, figureheads, and everyday commentary but this simply explains what the screen is displaying... nothing profound. Visually, this is fun for about 35 minutes, then it transitions to downright antagonizing.

It's a wild movie with a wild story, too bad in the end all we leave with is a lowered intelligence and a reason to forbear drugs. Del Toro grossed me out, Depp sported cool gear on his face, and this movie, though comical, serves no purpose unless you're seeking out a colloquial Wikipedia page on the effects of drugs abused in this film.

Fun nonetheless.
