Review of Fay Grim (2007) by Private U — 29 May 2009
Brilliant sequel to Hal Hartley's shamefully under-rated HENRY FOOL. The genius of this film is that it takes all the conclusions we drew about Henry in the first film and throws them out the window. As is often the case, Hal's script begins as satire (in this case, of espionage movies) and gradually morphs into melodrama, embracing all the cliches it had been poking fun at earlier.
My only real complaint is that Thomas Jay Ryan and James Urbaniak aren't really in this film enough; but the promise of a third film makes up for this.
Hal Hartley remains the cinema's best kept secret...
