Review of Father of the Year (2018) by Tim W — 05 Aug 2018
Weirdly, this is the second Netflix film I've watched in the last 24 hours (I know, I'm that sad) that suffers from massive tonal dissonance. Like Father was a family rom com full of really bad language and this is a kids film full of the same, thus in one fell swoop alienating their biggest potential audience share.
Also weirdly, both films have good individual scenes that show what could have been. Here, the ersatz jacuzzi in the pick up was great fun. Unfortunately, it caused the film to peak way too early. Thereafter, it relies on the usual cliches of shock: the foul-mouthed child and old woman thing.
David Spade gave the best turn and just needs better material. Of course, Adam Sandler's clumsy hoof print is all over it. When are Netflix going to get shut of him? I've heard Albanian gangsters will bump people off AND bury them in the woods for 10 grand.
Netflix earned over $500 million dollars in 2017, so they should be able to stuff him screaming into a solid gold coffin and fire him into the sun.
