Review of Father of the Bride Part II (1995) by Alexander C — 23 Sep 2012
A sequel with just about all the right ingredients again, not overdone, cleverly stretched out and just as moving and entertaining as the first installment. Thankfully they didn't go a third outing as there are no more ideas to use that brings them all together again under such warm-hearted circumstances.
A big family holiday may have been an idea but from here on in they just become money spinners and desperate cheese! After getting over the Wedding up's and down's of his Daughter Annie, Steve Martin reprises the role as George and now years on has to deal with another family announcement that surely fits the sequel - a pregnancy! At first, as with the Wedding George tells and shows us the negative side of his thoughts and we watch his stress unfold again dealing with the reality of becoming a Grandpa and getting older! Once again the movie does this in a comical, tasteful and moving way.
Great perfomances and script as with the first and a story that really tugs on the heartstrings. Martin Short is also back as he was a key character in the first movie but this time his services extend to 'baby showers' and strongly bonding with George in order to help him out through the, erm - crisis! The twist if one to this story is that two babies are born and not both are Annie's.
