Review of Fatal Contact (2006) by Andrew L — 31 Mar 2008
A twisted-approach to the rags-to-riches, rise-to-the-top martial arts movie. Jacky Wu (Jing) shows that he has enough charisma to carry a leading role...but is also in danger of being typecasted as the quiet, soft-spoken hero with deadly skills.
..wait...isn't that Jet Li's domain? =P Nevertheless, Wu's presence cannot be denied, and, as usual, his grace and speed during the fight sequences are top notch. He really just might be the next Chinese martial arts superstar.
.. Ronald Cheng is his funky self again - always enjoyable...and a big nod to the movie's theme song (sung by Cheng) - a sad, but stirring ballad, beautifully sung. Besides the fighting and the two "leads," the plot is standard and cliched, and the female roles are horribly acted.
Directors/producers/casting directors/whatever need to really screen their female leads - performance over looks please! Stop giving just any popular female popstar an acting role! Anyway, worth checking out, just for the fight sequences - and dark enough to recommend!
