Review of Fat Girl (2001) by Phil N — 30 Apr 2008
One of the films from the Extreme Films Research project that the BBFC commissioned, so I'd wanted to see what the fuss was out. Perhaps expecting a cold, detached arty film, A Ma Soeur totally confounded my expectations.
A tale of two sisters' sexual awakening it portrays an absorbing yet discomforting drama - especially as you're sat with Anais (the fat 12yr old) watching Elena (her pretty 15yr old sister) losing her virginity to a persistent, sweet-talking Italian student that she's met on holiday.
There's a huge sense of foreboding as the family drive home and with good reason... the ambiguous ending (heavily cut in the UK) is a real shock, yet makes perfect sense - whichever way you wish to interpret it.
