Review of Fat Girl (2001) by Ben W — 14 May 2008
Perhaps its just the fact that breillats approach is something I find entirely too idealistic that made this an unpleasant experience. but there are other things to dislike. she seemed to be trying to champion this "love" dynamic between these 2 despicable characters when it didnt appear to me to be love.
now I can handle despicable characters, that is not what killed the film for me. its that she idealizes their situation. I can guarantee you that the guy in the story was only in it to get laid. had other events in the story not interceded, he would have been gone not long after.
but she takes the easy, idealistic way out and lets him off the hook with a climax thats basically a diversion from the problems of the film. and to a certain extent that works. the scene creeps up on you after youve been expecting something horrific and then you get blindsided.
its basically guerrilla film making but in the wrong setting.
