Review of Fat Girl (2001) by Burcu S — 26 Feb 2009
Part honest portrait of teenage sexuality, part "look at me I'm being shocking" attention grabbing, Fat Girl is a genuinely perplexing film. Watching it court controversy in such a straightforward fashion, it's difficult to tell where the filmmaker's intentions lay.
Part of me seems to appreciate the shock that is elicited during the film, but part of me feels also like this shock, especially at the ending, is no less cheap or crass than something I'd find watching Hostel Part 2.
