Review of Fat City (1972) by Prasad P — 03 May 2009
One of the greatest of American directors tackles stone-cold, bone weary realism in this exemplary boxing drama from the early '70's. One of John Huston's later films, this came out at the time when the New Hollywood wunderkids were making serious waves in Hollywood, when studios took chances with director-oriented, personal projects.
The story is simple enough - about amateur boxing in the working class neighbourhood of Stockton, in California. But it is in the simple creation of time, place and mood and the convincing characters lifted out of real life - full of desperation and hope - that the movie truly wins out.
It may not have the swells and swirls of a traditional 'serious drama', but will leave impressions and images in your subconscious long after you've switched off your DVD player.
