Review of Fargo (1996) by Richard N — 13 Mar 2015
Fargo is a truly exceptional and wonderfully dark film from the Coen brothers. The whole affair just feels so, almost, quaint. The setting especially emphasises this, which makes the events that unfold that much better.
William H. Macy wasvery good here, but this is McDormand's and Buscemi's film. Buscemi's (spoiler) deaths was one of the funniest moments of dark comedy you will ever see. The fact that William H.
Macy's character basically screws over his entire family because he's such a passive arse is aleo one of the film's greatest qualities. I found myself always glued to the screen intently and the score was one of true greatness.
But, this film also demonstrates some of the best cinematography I have ever witnessed in a comedy. And then I found out why; Roger Deakins. I love this film with a vengence, if that even makes sense.
Fargo is perhaps the quintessential dark comedy for the ages. Because everything about it works.
