Review of Farewell My Concubine (1993) by Yan Z — 25 Jul 2007
A sweeping epic movie that sums up Chinese history of 20th century through the eyes of 2 Beijing opera performers (Leslie Cheung and Fengyi Zhang) and the prostitue (Li Gong) that comes between them. The complex relationship between the 3 characters seeme to suggest the complex political turmoils that have rocked China ever since the end of Qing dynasty.
I agree with many people that you need to at least have a faint idea of Chinese history to enjoy this film. So, I highly DO NOT recommend this movie to: Homophobes, young children, people who get bored easily, people who have zero clue about Chinese culture whatsoever, and people who enjoy conventional popcorn flicks.
