Review of Farewell My Concubine (1993) by Ben D — 19 Jul 2008
Epic. Kaige Chen became an instant favorite with this masterful achievement. In all of Mr. Chen's (Chinese) movies, China is a leading character, a powerfully felt presence. In the times leading up to the Cultural Revolution, the Beijing Opera was a symbol of the old China.
The old China was not kind to the individual as we see with the actors in the opera company, . The forces of the Revolution repress the humanity of the individual to the point where anything is renounced, even love for one another.
This is similar in theme to another favorite movie of mine, 1984.
