Review of Far North (2008) by Familiar S — 01 Feb 2011
Having seen The Warrior by the same director it wasn't difficult to persuade me to rent this when I saw it on somebody's recommendation list. It's got Sean Bean in which should have turned me off but there was some potential in Kapadia's debut feature so I went for this.
Beautifully shot in Norway the film retains elements of the mythical approach The Warrior takes and Sean Bean doesn't get on your nerves despite his ropey Russian accent. Sadly, it was just a bit boring and I was wondering if it was just me or the film because I knew it looked great yet it just didn't feel right.
Where the mystery of the exact historical context in The Warrior works here everything just felt a bit all over the place with too little information left out so by the time I got to the ending I wasn't really that interested because it was just silly and a waste of good cinematography.
