Review of Far from Heaven (2002) by Drew C — 30 Jun 2007
With a strong homage to the sumptuous 50s melodramas of Douglas Sirk, Todd Haynes crafts a gorgeous and socially important film that is a grand example of subtlety. Julianne Moore's performance is the mark of a true artist, and Dennis Quaid's is revelatory.
To go along with the great performances and a well-structured script, the cinematography almost bathes the film in color; it's palpable. The sets, costumes, and one of Elmer Bernstein best and last scores is rich in tone and beauty.
