Review of Far from Heaven (2002) by Euripides C — 07 Mar 2009
Few movies can grab me from the very start to the bitter end like this one has! I saw it at the theater several years ago in Hawaii, and I never forgot it..I wanted to relive the story because Julianne Moore and Dennis Quaid gave a phenomenal performance! Todd Haynes (writer and director) has created a moving, touching, and thought provoking film about a "perfect marriage" and the shocking secret that could destroy it.
The musical score, costume design and feel of the movie is just perfect. Cathy is the ideal 50s housewife, living the perfect 50s life: healthy kids, successful husband, social prominence. Then one night she surprises her husband Frank kissing another man, and her tidy world starts spinning out of control.
In her confusion and grief, she finds consolation in the friendship of their African-American gardener, Raymond - a socially taboo relationship that leads to the further disintegration of life as she knew it.
Despite Cathy and Frank's struggle to keep their marriage afloat, the reality of his homosexuality and her feelings for Raymond open a painful, if more honest, chapter in their lives. I felt so sorry for Cathy (Julianne Moore) because she plays such a loving, wonderful character.
Our protagonist stands to loose the two men who mattered most in her life- one because of a deep secret and another due to the color of his skin. Very emotional film which I have added to my private collection.
Not to be missed!!
