Review of Far from Heaven (2002) by Grant W — 15 Jun 2011
I cannot be easily fooled like others were. Haynes successfully created a pleasant and beautifully-looking mood of colors, showing off his initial abilities as a painter, but he is a filmmaker that has much more to show in controversial and polemic displays. Moore is a powerful character once again, but the overabundant and exaggerated musical score (so that's why it received an Oscar nomination...) and the piling-up of racist issues such as homosexuality and discrimination are uncalled for.
The real issue here is Dennis Quaid: the final outcome of his character is actually the most correct and accurate truth told. Everything else is treated with a corny and weak scope. American Beauty did this in a more engaging manner, Magnolia was a smarter metaphoric tale of the American suburbs and Revolutionary Road addressed its topics at least with more honesty.
66/100.
